Fin-de-Siècle Satanism in Bohemian Paris: French Decadence and Occultism with Madeleine Spencer

Fin-de-Siècle Paris was a city in the midst of transformation both social and political. Beneath this maelstrom there could be found a darker, more esoteric current. This was the age of the Symbolists, the Decadents, Spiritualism, Rosicrucianism, and Satanism. In this lecture we will look at the phenomena of Parisian Satanism from its deep roots to the blossoms of decadent diabolism as it played out in art, literature, and strange cults. Along the way we will meet Luciferian Freemasons and defrocked priests, an unrepentant antipope and nuns driven mad with sexual frenzy. A celebration of an era haunted by long pale satanic dandies of whom it was said were: “Over-refined, faithless and morbidly self-observant…offering rash incense upon the high places to an unknown God, who is the God of darkness.”

Madeleine LeDespencer is a visual artist and author with a particular interest in the French Decadents, Catholic Mysticism, Diabolism, and Spiritualism. She identifies as a demimondiane, absintheur, and adoratrice de Satan.

Devil’s Botany is the UK’s first absinthe distillery, founded by Directors of The Last Tuesday Society’s Absinthe Parlour & Cocktail Bar. Celebrating spirit’s connection to art, literature & mixology, Devil’s Botany is unleashing the future of absinthe with bold expressions for the adventurous drinkers of today.
