Expedition to The Amazon Rainforest – 28th Feb  2025 – 10th March 2025

This trip will be an immersive experience in the world’s largest, most biodiverse rainforest – led by American Naturalist Anthony Giardenelli who has spent over 20 years living in The Amazon– t

We will be immersed in the wildlife of the world’s greatest river, accompanied by expert local guides we hope to see sloths, squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, marmosets, river dolphins, poison arrow frogs, caiman, river otters, anacondas, macaws, extraordinary birds, giant waterlilies, orchids, ferns, palms & tarantulas.  We will canoe through the flooded forest, visit native communities to learn about their customs and cultures, drink rum in a wild distillery, learn about medicinal plants, swim in lakes and the Amazon River, go for night walks and see the stars, trek and camp out in the rainforest, fish for piranhas.   The days, and indeed nights, will be packed with activities, however as we will be based out of one lodge activities will be optional.

Program

Please note the program is provisional and will be constructed around the interests of the group – our guides are deeply knowledgeable in many areas from frogs and herpetology to birds, plants, fish and more.

The program will be flexible and every evening we will discuss the next days activities –

 

Day 1:  / Feb 28th

Arrival to Iquitos, guide will meet everyone at Iquitos airport, then transfer to hotel.

02:00pm = Lunch at La Casa de Fierro / the Iron House Restaurant

Free afternoon to relax.

07:30pm = Dinner at local restaurant by your own.

Day 2:  / March 1st

Breakfast at the Hotel.

08:30am = Belen Market Visit (walk from the Hotel)

11:00am = Boat Museum Visit / Indian Market (Boulevard)

01:30pm = Lunch at La Terraza Restaurant.

03:30pm = Enjoy the Carnival Festival, a traditional celebration in the Amazon Region, where people gather to decorate a palm tree with a lot of utensils, fabric, kid’s toys

s with typical music around the decorated tree, (people use water, water ballons, powders, colored clay, paint and all kind of possible colors to put on other people’s faces. This is part of a tradition to have fun) The tree will remain standing until it is cut down the next day in the evening

05:30pm = The Amazonian Ethnographic Museum Visit – Indian Market (Boulevard)

07:30pm =. Dinner at local restaurant by your own.

Day 3:  / March 2nd

Breakfast at the Hotel.

08:30am = Butterfly Farm Visit. (We will use motorcars from the hotel to get to the waterport to take a pamacari local wooden boat)

01:00pm = Lunch at the Port of the Hunting and Fishing Club overlooking the Nanay River

04:00pm = Enjoy the Carnival Festival: people gather around 3:30pm to start the celebration by throwing water to other people and putting all kind of color on other people’s faces. There is a small typical band playing typical Amazon music where people dance with a well decorated ax around the palm tree.

At around 6:30pm everybody is preparing to cut down the tree, once the palm tree falls everyone runs toward the tree to take/get whatever they can from the tree as a trophy.

Day 4:  / March 3rd

06:30am = Breakfast at the hotel

07:30am = Visit Alpahuayo Mishana National Reserve. A protected area for its diverse forest type and wildlife, a rainforest on white sandy soil where we enjoy flora and fauna.

11:30am = Rarec Visit / Lunch

03:30pm = Return to Iquitos.

05:30pm = The Amazonian Ethnographic Museum Visit – Indian Market (Boulevard)

07:30pm =. Dinner at local restaurant by your own.

Day 5:  / March 4th

Breakfast at the hotel

09:00am = Departure to the  Lodge

12:30pm = Arrival to the Lodge then brief orientation by the main guide and lunch.

03:00pm = Short walk by the lodge area in (terra firm rainforest) in search of wildlife, medicinal plants, flowers and some orchids. Return to Lodge by 5:45pm

07:00pm = Dinner

08:30pm = Optional nocturnal excursion by boat, canoe or foot (depending of season or weather) looking for animals such as insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds etc.

 

 

Day 6:  / March 5th

07:00am Breakfast

08:00am Short hike to see poison dart frogs and more primates, enjoy the biodiversity information done by our professional guide Return to Lodge by midday.

01:00pm Lunch

Afternoon Activity

3:00pm = Boat ride to see our fresh water pink and grey dolphin, swimming in the Amazon River and observation of the sunset, return to Lodge by 5:45pm

07:00pm = Dinner

08:00pm = Optional nocturnal excursion by boat, canoe or foot (depending of season or weather) looking for animals such as insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds.

 

Day 7: / March 6th

06:00am = Birdwatching by boat, enjoy watching parrots, hawks, toucans and more. Return to Lodge (optional morning activity)

07:30am = Breakfast

09:00am = Boat ride then walk to see the most beautiful aquatic plant called Victoria Regia.

Get to see sloth, monkeys and other animals.

Return to the Lodge by midday.

01:00pm = Lunch

Afternoon Activity

Visit to a Local Community and learn about their culture such as farming, fishing techniques and the use of the ancient mystical medicines derived from the rainforest, return to Lodge

07:00pm = Dinner

Optional nocturnal excursion by boat, canoe or foot (depending of season or weather) looking for animals such as insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds.

Day 8:  / March 7th

07:00am = Breakfast

08:00am = Boat piranha fishing activity and in black water and more opportunities to learn the Amazon Basin ecosystem. Return to Lodge

01:00pm = Lunch

Afternoon Activity

04:00pm = Boat ride along Oran creek and nocturnal jungle walk (on the way back) exploring the area to see animals commonly found in this ecosystem. Return to Lodge

08:00pm = Dinner.

 

 

 

Day 9:   / March 8th

Early Boat ride to see the sunrise and search of sloth, iguanas (optional activity)

07:30am = Breakfast

09:00am = Short hike to see some big trees and chances to see more exuberant wildlife such as the prehistoric looking Hoatzin birds, horned Screamer birds and more. Return to Lodge

01:00pm = Lunch

Afternoon Activity

03:00pm = Hike in search of more wildlife such as snakes, lizards, and get to see the Kapok tree, Amazonian Indian people believed that this tree was the connection between heaven, earth and the world that was believed to exist below. Return to Lodge

07:00pm = Dinner

08:00pm = Optional nocturnal excursion by boat, canoe or foot (depending of season or weather) looking for animals such as insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 10: / March 9th

07:00am = Breakfast

08:30am = Visit a Family to learn the weaving technique using palm leaf fiber called chambira, you will have the opportunity to learn how to make a handmade fan, bracelets, necklaces and a small basket. Return to the Lodge

01:00pm = Lunch

02:00pm = Return to Iquitos.

04:00pm = Arrival to Iquitos

7:30pm = Farewell Dinner at local restaurant by your own.
